MUS 317B – Jazz Arranging II

Students will learn basic arranging techniques pertaining to the jazz combo. Two, three, and four-horn writing will be explored as well as writing for the rhythm section. Ranges, harmonization techniques, brass mutes, orchestration, and in-class demonstrations will be emphasized. Assignments will be performed in class by common jazz instrumentation including trumpet, trombone, soprano sax, alto sax, tenor sax, baritone sax , and rhythm section.

Course Content:
1. Ranges of Trumpet, Trombone, Saxophones.
2. In class demonstrations of Rhythm section instruments and horns.
3. Writing drum, bass, piano and guitar parts.
4. One horn writing.
5. Embellishing a “lead sheet” melody.
6. Two horn writing.
7. Counter-melodies. (secondary lines)
8. Three-horn writing, Study Art Blakey arrangements.
9. Four horn writing.
10. Five-horn writing “supersax”.
