MUS 210BJ – Jazz Piano II

Upon successful completion of course, the student should be able to demonstrate the ability to comp blues, rhythm changes, and traditional jazz standards with two handed, idiomatic voicings (root & rootless). Standard tunes include So what, Little Sunflower, Maiden Voyage, Afternoon in Paris, Blue in Green, Along Came Betty, Blues for Alice, and Rhythm Changes.

Course content:

1. Review 3 and 4 note voicings with and without roots.

2. “So What” voicings.

3. Sus voicings.

4. Triads over 3rd and 7th. (altered dominant chords)

5. Diminished chord voicings.

6. Minor 7b5 voicings.

7. “Drop 2” voicings.

8. Modal voicings: Ionian, Dorian, Phrygian, Mixolydian, Lydian, and Aeolian.

9. Diatonic “folk music” accompaniment, add 9 voicings.
